Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan Underway

Postby K.Ryan on Thu Jun 04, 2009 12:09 pm

There has been some chat on the forums about the development of a State Mountain Bike Plan - well it is official now. Sport and Recreation Tasmania have engaged Inspiring Place and DirtArt to develop the plan. The plan will provide the framework for developing and marketing mountain bike opportunities in Tasmania.

Mountain bike riders and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide input into the plan through a series of community and stakeholder forums to be held towards the end of June 2009.

I will post forum details when they are confirmed (hopefully very soon), but until then the best spot for project updates and more information will be the website for the project: http://www.development.tas.gov.au/sportrec/mtbplan.

Any questions shoot me an e-mail: Keith.Ryan@development.tas.gov.au

This is great news, and potentially v.significant. Might be worth giving this topic space of its own, pehaps a heading alongside General, Bike Talk, Show Off Area etc?

It's been a mad rush to organise but I can now confirm the dates, times and venues for the community forums for the Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan:

North West Community Forum
22 June
7:00-9:00 pm
Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club

Northern Community Forum
23 June
7:00-9:00 pm
West Tamar Council Chambers, Riverside

Southern Community Forum
24 June
7:00-9:00 pm
Domain Athletics Centre, Hobart

I know it is short notice but I encourage everyone with an interest in the future of MTB in Tasmania to come to the forums if you can. If you can't make it there will be an opportunity to provide input into the plan through an on-line survey/feedback form which we hope to have on the MTB Plan late this week or early next week.

Also, if people simply wish to put there comments/feedback on this thread I will ensure the consultants review the comments as well. However, the information will be much more powerful and useful to the process if it is is included in the on-line survey.

Cheers

The on-line survey for the Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan is now open and can be found at the websites below.

All those who complete the survey can choose to go into the draw to win one of two National Parks Annual All Parks Passes.

Feel free to pass this e-mail on to anyone who may be interested, particularly those unable to attend the community forums next week.

I didn't spell it out in previous posts but the on-line survey closes 5 July 2009.

So make sure you complete the survey by 5 July if you want to have an input into the Tasmanian MTB Plan.

Also we had a good turn out in Ulverstone last night (30 people) and hope to have more in both Launceston tonight and Hobart tomorrow night.

See you there

Thanks to everyone who attended the land manager and community forums - great to see so many people interested in the future of MTB in Tas. There were some great thoughts, discussion and passion on display.

FYI we had the following numbers around the state:

Burnie (Land Managers) - 9
Ulverstone (Community) - 30

Prospect (Land Managers) - 10
Riverside (Community) - 45

Hobart (Land Managers) - 22
Hobart (Community) - 95

In total - 170 community members and 41 land managers around Tasmania.

Don't forget - the survey closes 5 July and we would like to get as many different riders filling out the survey as possible - so tell your mates about it if you haven't already.

568 Surveys Completed

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey - Well over 500 surveys completed is a good response from the MTB community. When we combine the results from the survey and the community forums we should have a clear picture of what the Tasmanian MTB community thinks are the priorities.

I'm trying to get the Minister for Sport and Rec to draw the national parks prizes, so will let you know when this has happened.

For those of you who have followed this thread you may be pleased to know that the Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan was officially launched at the Kate Reed NRA in Launceston today.

I would like to thank all the riders who provided input into the process. The positive response indicates the strong interest in providing a diversity of mountain bike opportunities in Tasmania and ensuring the activity is sustainably managed in the future.

The Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan is now available for download at <http://www.development.tas.gov.au/sportrec/mtbplan>. You may need to refresh the page.

Those in Lonny may also be interested to know that the launch coincided with the announcement of nearly $300K funding for the trail networks at Kate Reed and Trevallyn Reserves in Launceston through Sport and Recreation Tasmania’s Trails and Bikeways Grant Program.

Thanks again,

Keith
